Which Are the Best Centrifugal Juicers?

Centrifugal juicers are the most popular juicing machines which results in a confusingly wide selection of models making it difficult to choose the best one. The term "best centrifugal juicers" might mean different to everyone depending on individual juicing requirements and habits.

We did a thorough research and compared the most popular centrifugal juicers in terms of juice yield, overall juice quality, ease of use and cleaning.

Use the information on this page to see the major pros and cons of the top centrifugal juice extractors to select a model that fits your needs the best.

How Centrifugal Juicers Work

The spinning disk blade of the juicer first grinds and grates the vegetables and fruits added through a chute into a pulp. The high-speed rotation creates centrifugal force that squeezes the liquid content out of the pulp (just like the centrifuge of a washing machine does with the wet clothes) through a fine screen strainer. The juice flows into a glass or jar you place at the spout of the unit.

There are two types of centrifugal juicers:

  • non-ejection centrifugal juicing machines like the Acme 6001 Centrifugal Juicer or the Omega 1000 Juicer: in this machines the pulp remains inside the unit and you have to remove it from time to time. This type of juicers can produce cc. 1 liter juice before you need to get rid off the accummulated pulp. Obviously a non-ejection type juicer needs more time to clean.

  • automatic or self-ejection centrifugal juice extractors: in this case the pulp goes automatically into a plastic container placed usually at the back of the juicer. You don't have to stop the machine occasionally to remove the pulp from the basket. The Jack La Lanne Power Juicers are such self-ejection units.

Benefits of Centrifugal Juicers

  • The most important strength of centrifugal juicers is the quick juicing process. You just plug in the juicer, start the machine, add the washed and chopped fruits and vegetables through the feeding tube (choose one with a wide mouth, cc. 3" to sav time on cutting up the produce) and you have fresh, delicious juice within seconds. Self-ejecting juicers are especially good for almost non-stop, fast juicing. The high-speed, no-fuss juicing makes centrifugal juicers fitting to todays' accelareted lifestyle. Highly recommended for busy people who want to incorporate healthy, nutritious vegetable and fruit juices into their diet but have no time for lengthy juicing.
  • A centrifugal machine will juice almost all kinds of hard vegetables (carrots, beetroot, celery, ginger, cucumber) and softer ones like citrus fruits, apples, pineapple, mango, wild berries and even tomatoes. For some models e.g. Omega 1000 and Omega 4000 you can buy a citrus attachment allowing you to juice citrus fruits without having to peel them.

  • relatively high juice yield - a good centrifugal machine is able to obtain quite high volume of juice from the produce.

Weaknesses of Centrifugal Juicers

  • Lower-quality juice - the main disadvantage of centrifugal juicers is that the high speed causes the juice to get in contact with lots of air which accelerates oxidation of enzymes and vitamins decreasing the nutritional value of the juice.
TIP: drink the juice immediately after juicing (within 15 minutes) to get the most health benefits contained in the drink. Do not store or refrigerate juice from a centrifugal juicer since the benefitial nutrients will decompose. There are juice extractors ( e.g. Green Star) specifically designed to yield juices that can be stored after making.

  • no good for juicing leafy greens and herbs - alhough it's possible to get some juice out of leafy vegetables such as spinach, sorrel, lettuce, kale with a centrifugal juicer it will be a very inefficient process. Using a masticating or twin gear juicer yields twice as much juice from leafy greens as a centrifugal juicing machine would.
  • Noise - centrifugal juicers are the loudest types of juicers especially the automatic, self-ejecting models. So if noise generated during juicing is a problem for you then don't buy a centrifugal unit.

  • quick assembly and disassembly of the machine - a centrifugal juicer is fairly easy to put together and take apart after you finished juicing.

  • easy cleaning - a high-quality centrifugal juicer can be put in a dishwasher (on top rack) to save you time. To remove the produce fibers from between the tiny holes of the screen you need a good kitchen brush.

Centrifugal vs Masticating Juicers

Masticating style juicing machines (e.g the Champion juicer) and single gear or twin gear juicers work at much lower speed applying cold press method to extract juice from vegetables and fruits. The cold process and the fact that less air gets absorbed by the juice protects the nutients against oxidation increasing the shelf life and nutreint value of the juice.

TIP: Find out which are the best-value masticating (single auger) juicers.

On the other hand, auger juicers have their weaknesses, too (more preparation time, more cleaning work) and one has to decide between a centrifugal unit and a gear-type unit based on several factors (types of produce to be juiced, frequency of juicing).
